Why proofread in multiple passes?
A comprehensive review mixes too many different problems. AI is more useful when given a specific task: finding an ambiguity, lightening a sentence, spotting a repetition, or checking a continuity element.
Four levels to distinguish
- Content: plot, argumentation, pacing and the book's promise.
- Coherence: characters, chronology, locations and recurring information.
- Style: fluidity, repetitions, register and point of view.
- Language: spelling, grammar, typography and punctuation.
Good practices with AI
Provide useful context, ask for targeted analysis, and always compare the proposal to the original text. A grammatically correct rewrite can still weaken an image, a subtext, or an intentional rhythm.
AI proofreading is not editorial validation. A beta reader, a proofreader, or an editor brings human perspective on the effect your text produces.
